How to make a PLU

This document will detail how to make a new PLU.

There are two ways to make a new PLU. You can duplicate an existing PLU then modify it, or create a brand new PLU. The process is the same for both PLUs and modifier PLUs. The difference between a PLU and a modifier PLU is how they are portrayed in the system. PLUs are the initial buttons you push to order items from your menu and are black on kitchen tickets. Modifier PLUs are the are the changes that are made to an order such as selecting a choice of side dish or adding an ingredient to a main dish and are red on kitchen tickets.

Duplicating a PLU

This will create a copy of the PLU with all the settings pre-configured. Since all of the settings are the same the new copy PLU will have all the same modifier sets as the one you copied it from.

Configuring a new PLU

  1. The detail section is the first section of the PLU that opens after it has been selected. This section will be blank if you are creating a new PLU. The question marks next to each section will give you a blurb about the section to help you fill it out properly.

  2. A Duplicated PLU will have all the information from the PLU it was copied from.

  3. The first field will change the icon. Click the drop down arrow to bring up a list of options or type what you want into the field to auto filter your options.

  4. Edit the name.

    1. The “Name” field sets the name of the PLU. Any rows below it that are blank will auto populate after the name is entered.

    2. The Kitchen ticket text field changes the item on the receipt printer or KVS system in the kitchen.

    3. The Customer Receipt text field will change what the customer sees on their bill.

    4. The online name will be entered into your online ordering system if your location utilizes Sails online ordering feature.

  5. Change the price.

    image.png

    1. This may be unnecessary if you copied the PLU from something that is the same price as the new PLU.

    2. Default price will change the base price of the new item.

    3. Cost is an optional entry that details restaurants cost to produce the item. Cost will auto populate 35% of the cost of the item. This can be changed manually as this may be inaccurate for your location.

    4. Percentage addition uses the default price and adds the percent on top of that price. Typically used by modifier PLUs. Generally you would leave the price blank so that it inherits its price from the PLU its attached to. The price would then be the percent of the PLUs price added on to the price of the item.

    5. Variable price if selected will prompt you to enter a price when the item is rang in.

    6. Refund PLU will turn the button for this item into a refund button once the new PLU is updated in the system.

    7. Active sets the item to be used in the system. Unchecking that box will set the item to inactive and will be removed them from the system. You can select to view inactive items if you want to find an inactivated item in order put it back into the system.

  6. Save.

    image.png

    1. As soon as you save a new PLU it will add it to the system. If you exit the screen before saving the new PLU will not be there when you search for it.

    2. If this was a new PLU (not a copied) the rest of the tabs will stop being faded out and you will be able to select them to edit more of your PLU.

    3. A duplicated PLU will change to the new item you wanted after you edit and save, but all the other settings will be the same this means it will have been added to any group the other PLU was in so you may need to remove it from groups that the original PLU was in that the new one is unnecessary for.

    4. There are several other options to modify your PLU, but technically speaking your new PLU has been created at this point. Select the links below for breakdowns on the other ways you can modify a PLU.
